Frequently Asked Questions - Return to Play Plan

Will the Tryout Fee that has been paid, cover the 2 Physical Distance Evaluation Sessions?

  • Yes

Why aren't we just doing what we always do?

  • We are doing our best to keep all participants safe. We are following Hockey Alberta Return to Hockey Plan and work within AHS and City of Red Deer Facility Use guidelines as they relate to pandemic response planning.

Why am I required to purchase a AAA Cohort Package if I do not know whether I will be invited to Join the Cohort?

  • 1) Purchasing a package indicates a desire to move forward with registration and join a Cohort or Level 2 Physical Distance Team Training. Due to individual health or comfort levels, we cannot assume that athletes are comfortable participating in group activity.
  • 2) Players were only required to pay a tryout fee at the time of registration and they will not immediately become part of a team. Typically the team covers the cost of ice time once tryouts have concluded. Cohorts will run for approximately 2 weeks prior to team formation
  • 3) Once the 2 Physical Distance Skill Sessions have concluded, player assignment will happen quickly.  There wont sufficient time for people to opt-in to the cohort
  • 4) The $150 Fee will be refund or moved over to a Level 2 Physical Distance Team Training Package if players are not invited to join the AAA Cohort

Why is there a minimum level of previous play required to tryout for AAA?

  • Hockey Alberta has advised that the maximum number of participants on the ice is 20 skaters and 4 goalies
    • In order to efficiently get through all players in a reasonable amount of time we are limited to how many participants can be involved

Has Hockey Alberta provided time-lines for AAA team Selection?

  • Yes

Why do the Level 1 Evaluation Sessions move right into a Cohort and the Level 2 Evaluation Sessions move into Physical Distance Team Training?

  • Players competing for AAA teams are required to break physical distancing in order to play contact hockey and have their ability to play AAA hockey effectively evaluated
  • Players competing for AA and A teams will remain in a physical distance scenario longer as to not hamper their ability to move from one group to another. Players who have joined a Cohort do not have the ability to move from one group to the next. They must in fact take a 14 day break after leaving a Cohort, before they are able to join a new one.
  • Players who are released from the AAA Cohort will be able to join the AA team training group as they will be physical distancing until October.
  • Players assigned to the top team training group (u18-U13) will be required to Cohort into October-prior to being selected to a team.

Can an Athlete join a Sport Cohort with another group or organization?

  • Athletes are required to take a 14 day break after leaving a Cohort, before joining a new Cohort
  • Participants cannot be members of 2 Sport Cohorts simultaneously
    • We will only moving into Cohort situations once we are no longer able to maintain physical distance to evaluate a players ability to compete.
      • This must happen closely behind evaluations for AAA, but will be delayed as much as possible with AA and A levels.

Who will be running the Physical Distance Skill Sessions?

  • Members of the RDMH mentorship team will be running on ice Physical Distance Sessions
  • Coaches and Evaluators will be watching in the stands

Are spectators allowed in the building during On Ice sessions?

  • The City is working to establish increased access to recreation spaces, while continuing to focus on the safe and responsible use of City facilities during Stage 2 of the Provincial COVID19 Relaunch Strategy.
  • The City of Red Deer have asked that the following information be shared:
    • Masks are highly recommended in lobbies, common areas and circulations spaces - 2m physical distancing may not be possible in all areas.
    • Masks are not recommended during intense physical activity
    • Spectator capacity limits will vary at each location, based on physical distancing restrictions.
