The third team on the ice is excited for another great season! TEAM Ref is ready to go. We are on the lookout for anyone born in 2012 or earlier to throw on the striped sweater.
It is a great way to build confidence, earn some money and be part of a great group of young and old officials. Below is a list of frequently asked questions that might help point you in the right direction if you are new to this thing.
How old do I need to be?
If you were born in 2012 or earlier you can officiate hockey this season.
How many games will I get?
This is a hard question to answer. Things like availability in your schedule, referee experience and ability are major factors in answering this question. Our assignors will be utilizing an online assigning system called Arbiter that will help keep everything organized and hopefully all of our officials working a good number of games.
How much do I get paid?
The pay is actually pretty decent all things considered. A bonus is that you will be getting paid cash immediately following the game that you work.
How much does it cost to get started?
There is definitely a start up cost involved. You will need to pay for registration which covers the cost of the instructor and the facility. You will also need a jersey, whistle and a helmet/visor before you step on the ice the first time. Facebook Marketplace is a great place to look for gently used items.
How long does the clinic last? What if I have a game that day?
The clinic usually goes from 9AM-3PM with a break for lunch in the middle. We have a number of clinics around central Alberta. You can attend any clinic in any location that works for you. Leaving early isn't an option so please try to find one that works around your schedule. Level one officials (15 years of age and younger) will be on the ice for an hour. Skates, helmet and whistle will be required.
How do I get games?
The three assignors in RDMH are Logan Hill, Paul Coad and Ty Elliott. We will get you added to the Arbiter assigning program. Once you are logged in, you will be ready to be assigned. When they assign you a game you will be able to accept it on the website or app. This will be covered in depth at the RD clinic. There will also be tutorials on the RDMH website under the RDMH Officiating Program tab.
I'm a little nervous about my first game, will I know what to do?
The learning curve can be pretty steep. We have a great mentorship program in RDMH and it will be our goal to have an on ice mentor with you on the ice for your first game. This mentor will be there to help coach you along and provide the support you need.
