Red Deer Minor Hockey Announces New Head Coach for U17 AAA North Stars

Red Deer, Alberta - Red Deer Minor Hockey announces that Greg Esteves has stepped down as Head Coach of the U17 AAA North Stars, citing personal reasons.  Esteves has been a valued member of our program, and we thank him for his dedication and leadership during his time with the North Stars.

In an exciting new chapter for the North Stars, Red Deer Minor Hockey is thrilled to announce that Nic Tarnasky has accepted the position of Head Coach.  Tarnasky joins the North Stars with an exceptional professional hockey background, having competed in 245 NHL games and over 750 professional games across the NHL, AHL, and KHL.

“Nic brings a wealth of knowledge and experience from his professional playing career, but equally important is his deep connection to Alberta’s hockey roots,” says Jason Stephens, General Manager of Red Deer Minor Hockey. “He knows what it takes to reach the highest levels of the game, and his time in Alberta’s U15 AAA and U18 AAA programs in Leduc means he understands the journey our players are on. After numerous discussions, I am confident in Nic’s vision for the team and his commitment to fostering a supportive and competitive environment.”

Most recently, Tarnasky served as an Assistant Coach for the Rocky Rams Junior B team for four years, where he showcased his commitment to developing young players and creating a positive team culture. Known for his dedication to player growth on and off the ice, Tarnasky brings a fresh perspective and enthusiasm to the North Stars, aiming to elevate the program’s success and engagement.

“I’m excited to join the North Stars and work with such a talented group of U17 players,” Tarnasky said. “My goal is to help each player reach their full potential, instilling both competitive drive and personal growth that will benefit them in hockey and beyond.”

Nic Tarnasky will make his official coaching debut with the North Stars at practice on Thursday evening, where he will begin getting to know the team and kick off his role.
